“It wouldn't be the Learning Technologies conference without an overview of what lies ahead. The pace of change in our field is unpredictable. Sometimes it seems terribly slow, but right now it seems we are on the cusp of an enormous shift. During the first part of the session Steve Wheeler, Associate Professor of Learning Technology, Plymouth University, will explain ’what's hot, what's new and what's coming’.
A new wave of technologies is set to transform how we work, live and learn. This is not business-as-usual, this is technology enabling new things to be done in new ways. The impact for organisational L&D is potentially transformative – providing us with new ways to help learn, and considerable threats to our current ways of working. The clearest examples of this shift: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the semantic web. Steve session covers:

During the second part of the session, Tony O'Driscoll, Global Head, Strategic Learning Solutions, Duke Corporate Education, will discuss ‘putting new technologies to work - the challenge and the opportunity’.
Technology is opening up new possibilities in workplace learning, and challenging our role in it. The risk is that we use these technologies to do the old things, just in a slightly different form – which usually means reproducing a digital version of the school classroom. The alternative, says Tony O’Driscoll, is to recognise the real potential of these technologies, and fully exploit them, helping people not just learn more, but learn better, and become more capable, both for themselves and for the business. Associate Professor of Learning Technology, Plymouth University
Steve chairs the Learning Futures group and leads the Computing team at the Plymouth Institute of Education. He chairs the EDEN Network of Academics and Professionals, which boasts a membership of over 2000 individuals and organisations. He researches into technology supported learning, with emphasis on the pedagogy underlying the use of social media. He has given keynotes in more than 35 countries, is author of more than 150 scholarly articles, and 5 books, with over 5000 academic citations.

Tony O'Driscoll heads Strategic Leadership Solutions for Duke CE, where he leads global development of solutions focused on getting leaders ready for what's next. Prior to joining Duke CE, Tony was a founding member of IBM Global Service's Strategy and Change consulting practice, he also served on the Faculty of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and North Carolina State University's Poole College of Management.
