eLearning conference at World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)
Simulacra

20-Oct-2005 » Training Press Releases » Simulacra is proud to be a partner to the official WSIS parallel event "Initiatives 2005 Colloquium" around the theme of "Standards as an enabler of the Education for All action plan".

The event is organised by The Agency of French-speaking Universities (AUF) and an international alliance of countries, which are members of the ISO/IEC Standards Committee for Information Technology for Learning, Education and Training (ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36). It is taking place under the High Patronage of His Excellence Abdou Diouf, Secretary-General of French-speaking countries, and under the Honorary Presidency of His Excellence Mr. Lazhar Bououni, Minister of Higher Education in Tunisia.

The purpose of the event is to identify how Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be used to facilitate learning and the communication of knowledge. In particular, the event aims to be the starting point for international stakeholders in these areas to collaborate in the creation of standards to enable the objectives of the WSIS Action Plan.

Simulacra's founder and strategic advisor, Patrick Towell, has been a key member of the Steering Committee and Co-President of the Programme Committee for the event, with Simulacra providing logistical support for these committees.

Reinforcing the comments of the Secretary General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Towell comments: "Learning, education and training are essential to the future wellbeing and prosperity of citizens, governments and commercial organisations throughout the world. As in other sectors, such as telephony, media - with the Internet, as the ultimate example - standards are vital to the creation of transparent and effective communities and markets."

However learning and education are not just another medium or communication - hence this event, as Towell explains: "Within the learning sectors, we are teaching future generations their culture, their heritage and their language - without the societal framework around ICTs that WSIS should provide, we risk losing our fantastically diverse identities in such a global and digital world."

More information on the event

The event will focus on the following four areas:
- The role of development of education and training standards as enablers in the construction of the shared knowledge society,
- Cultural and linguistic diversity,
- Role of standards in economic aspects of the sustainable development,
- Collaboration and the development of standards for technological innovation.

The event takes place on 14/15 November 2005 at the Kram Palexpo,Tunis,Tunisia.
