Healthcare e-Academy course receives RCN accreditation
Virtual College | Leeds, England

5-Mar-2010 » Training Press Releases » 'The module equips healthcare workers across the country with a better understanding and ability to respond to what is a growing problem nationwide': Judith Clarkson, Virtual College.

The Healthcare e-Academy has received Royal College of Nursing (RCN) accreditation for its ground breaking 'Management of Urinary Catheterisation for Adults' e-learning course.

Delivered entirely online, the keynote aim of the module is to improve catheter care and reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). Although it is a common procedure, urinary catheterisation carries many risks and is said to be one of the chief causes of healthcare-acquired infections in the NHS.

The Healthcare e-Academy, an operating division of online training pioneer Virtual College, of Ilkley, West Yorkshire, developed the new training module in partnership with key personnel from Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust.

It is targeted primarily at workers in the NHS, though the information is said to be applicable to anyone working in the healthcare sector with responsibilities for catheterisation, including hospital support personnel and care homes staff.

Judith Clarkson, Virtual College's divisional director of e-academies, said: "The module has been extremely well received and is making an increasing impact in equipping healthcare workers across the country with a better understanding and ability to respond to what is a growing problem nationwide.

"Having RCN learning and development accreditation illustrates that the course is a valuable resource that actively promotes best practice and contributes to public and patient safety by supporting nursing and health care delivery.

"Such recognition aligns the Healthcare e-Academy with the RCN's high standards and commitment to the professional development of nurses, other health professionals and managers who need to choose the most effective use of time and resources."

The Healthcare e-Academy was established in 2009 to deliver specialist online training programmes relating to clinical and non-clinical subjects relevant to the healthcare sector. It currently has almost 88,000 registered e-learners. Details of all courses offered by the academy are posted at www.healthcareea.co.uk
